Hey you guys!
James and I spent an unhealthy amount of time on the FREE INTERNET at our posh hostel in Auckland. We downloaded all of Adam & Joe since we've been away. It's simply ideal for the long bus trips.
So last Thursday (26 Nov) we hopped on a bus to stinky Rotorua (it's official name). It's the home of NZ's hot springs and sulphurous mud bubbles. We were warned by the guidebooks it is rather touristy. Damn tourists! We only saw about 7 to our knowledge. We stayed 2 nights in the Spa Lodge that had it's own little natural hot spa - embarrassing photos to follow. We slept in our first bunkbeds. Exciting!
Friday - took a walk around the local park to see mud and steam bursting forth from the ground. Was quite spectacular, and free. We were followed most of the way by an entire class of school children dressed in yellow. That evening we attended a Maori cultural and Hangi evening at Mitai nr Rainbow Springs, closely followed by a night walk through a kiwi sanctuary. Educational.
Next morning we took to the luge - 3 times. I feel uncultured to say I think I might have enjoyed it as much as the terrifying Maori dancing. 4pm on Saturday and we were on the bus to Napier. We decided to fly by the seat of our pants as with Rotorua, and just turn up without booking anywhere. More fool us. All the backpacking hostels were completely full - so we ended up in the rather salubrious Masonic Hotel. Was great to have fluffy towels and yer own loo.
Yesterday we went on an afternoon wine tasting tour with Hamish from Prinsy's . He was a great chap, really friendly and took the 2 of us on our own private tour round 4 wineries and up a mountain. We bought a bottle at each place we stopped and miraculously got them into our tiny backpacks. Where there's a will...
Early this morning we boarded another nakedbus and we are now in Wellington - home of the Conchords. We haven't done much yet. It's a bit drizzley but we've 3 days to explore.
Blog soon...

does this comment thing work?
ok, so it does work. Mom and Dad are here with me (dictating) and we have been looking at your hundreds of photographs. Bringing back memories for us all. Keep enjoying. We like to see all the places you are sleeping and what you are eating. Nice.
Marie likes taking the pictures of where we stay - I like the food. Did you see the massivesteak i got an an RSA in Piahai - its was enormous!
The RSA, hee hee, that makes me think of Alf Stewart, remember when we waved at him? He was on the Wright Stuff today.
You do realize you found wine space in your bag due to the Ruthless De-bulking Of The Backpack that I oversaw. I'm looking after your lovely thai fisherman troosers, you've found room for some top-notch kiwi plonk! You see, we all win.
What do you think of it so far?
Its amazing what you can fit into your rucksack when you want to.
Even Elsa. xx
Hiya James
Good to see someone else enjoying NZ, Rotarua don't stink that much and I'm surprised you missed the Agropark.
Get you ass across to Lake Taupo, having just come back from NZ myself (had to get that in)
I cannot suggest how much YOU NEED to get there and you're not far, if you don't go there I will exceptionally sulk at you for evermore!!
Go on a sunny day unlike me and I also recommend the Huka Falls.
Hi Marie and James
